Heartache

All is still
Within this cage, her mind is a deity
One that shifts and shapes
And fills the emptiness of what thoughts have left
Here, the days meld into weeks and the months into years
Here, she sits alone
With eyes wide open
As if she waits for her children to return from school
Or her husband from work
Her arms limp and battered
And bruised with age
Her hands trembling with eternal sin
With what’s left of an aching heart and a distorted mind
Here, she reassures herself of the chance she has been given
Of the hope of renewal and the promise of forgiveness
Here, she sits alone for the eternal sedation
Here, she waits alone for an immaculate end
